Welcome!

I am beyond excited to start my 4th year of teaching art at Elkhart Middle School! EMS is truly a fantastic school and I am blessed with such amazing students. I love being a part of the student's and parent's lives!

I am a fellow Elkhart Alumni and graduated from Stephen F. Austin State University with a major in Art Education. I have been creating art since I began to take art classes in high school and absolutely love it! I recently got married to my wonderful husband, Andrew. We have three pets: our pitbull mix, Kash and two cats Mia & Foxie.

There are two art classes being offered this year: Art 1 and Art 2/3

Art 1 - I consider this class to be the "building blocks" to art. My primary goal for this class is to teach the students the basics of drawing, art appreciation and to teach them as many different media (material used for creating art) as possible, such as: pencil, paint, printmaking, clay, pen & ink, etc. The students will create a sketchbook at the beginning of the year and are required to do a weekly drawing for a grade. The sketchbook is similar to a journal and allows me and the students to see their weekly progress of their drawing skills.

Art 2/3 - The students will utilize the knowledge and skills they acquired in Art 1 to better help them be successful in Art 2/3. With the primary goals being very similar to that of Art 1, we extend our focus to a more in depth approach to creating art and begin to help the students establish their artistic style and finding their "voice" in art. The students also keep a sketchbook in Art 2/3, just like they did in Art 1. Once again, we do a weekly drawing for a grade, but we are able to learn more advanced skills.

Mark your calendars! The Fourth Annual EMS Art Show will be on May 2nd! All students will have at least one (or two) artworks in the show. It is an amazing event to physically see all of the hard work of the art students displayed in one room.

Portfolio Review

Today, all art students are taking home their artwork and portfolios. I have sent a “Portfolio Review” half sheet of paper for you to sign stating that you have viewed their artwork. Those are due back on Friday, May 12th. These are for an easy 100 in the gradebook and if they bring it back tomorrow, they can earn a 110! There is an optional section on the paper if you have positive comments about your child’s artwork that you can fill out if you want.

Thank you for your continued support and helping to make the art show a huge success! Whether you bought cookies, drinks or just simply attended, your efforts are so appreciated!

We had TWO wonderful articles in the Palestine Herald Press featuring the artwork of some of the art students. Here are links to those:

Thanks again for a wonderful year!

Art Show Tomorrow!

One final reminder the EMS Art Show will be in the gym from 5-7 PM tomorrow! I will be there at 4:00, if you absolutely cannot make it during the official time of 5-7. Please ensure that your child checks in with me & is dressed nicely in order to get a 100 for their art show test grade!

I look forward to seeing you tomorrow!

Just another reminder the Art Show will be on Tuesday, May 2nd from 5-7 in the middle school gym. Attendance is mandatory for all art students and the students will receive a test grade for attending & dressing nicely. Please let me know if you have any events that in conflict with the art show time. I look forward to seeing all of you there for a wonderful evening!

A reminder that the 4th Annual Elkhart Middle School Art Show will be on Tuesday, May 2nd, 5:00-7:00 PM in the Middle School Gym, which is two weeks away. ALL art students will have artwork in the show! There will be over 400 artworks in the art show and it is truly amazing to see all of the students hard work on display in a single room. There will be refreshments served.

Attendance is mandatory for students and will be for a test grade. I am notifying you early and discussing this with the students today in class so you can make plans to attend. Students took home a note stating all of this today to give to you!

Some students have signed up to bring either cookies, drinks or to help take down the show (7:00-7:15). These are extra credit opportunities, so not all of them have signed up.

Each student will receive a test grade for the art show based on two categories:

  1. Attendance (70 Points): All students are required to attend. The students do not have to stay the entire two hours. If you know of an event that will prevent you from attending, please contact me as soon as possible.
  2. Dress (30 Points): All students are expected to dress nice. Jeans are allowed.

I’m looking forward to an exciting evening and seeing each and every one of there! Call or email me if you have any questions at alobasso@elkhartisd.org or 903-764-2459.

Art Class Update!

Art 1:

These kiddos have been painting silhouettes and landscapes for about a week. Our paintings are due this Friday. The main objectives we have been focusing on with paint is mixing custom colors from the primary and neutral colors and how to modulate with our paint (go from one color to another). We have been having a blast and learning a lot during this painting unit!

Art 2/3:

Tomorrow, the Art 2/3 students will begin painting a landscape. We have already selected our pictures to paint and started practicing mixing custom colors and modulating last Friday. We are also creating a parody of famous artworks in our sketchbook this week! So excited to see how those turn out!

We have been thoroughly enjoying using the donated egg cartons to store our paint in, so thanks again for anyone who donated those to us! Once again, thank you all for your support of the fine arts department at EMS!

Art Class Update

Both Art 1 & Art 2/3 classes will be having a six weeks test on Thursday, December 15th, over our most current vocabulary. We have been studying every day in class since last Monday by playing a game of bingo for the first 5 minutes of each class. It’s been a fun way to learn our vocabulary!

The art department is in need of two supplies, if you guys can help me ou, please. We need Styrofoam or plastic egg cartons (either a 12 or 18 packs). Many students have been bringing these in already, which has been so helpful! (Thank you!) We also are in need of large cardboard boxes that are able to be cut into 12 inch by 12 inch squares. Art 1 will be using these to create 3D letters sometime after spring break. The kids will get a gotcha ticket for each item they bring. Thank you in advance for this!

Art 1:

We are currently working on learning oil pastel techniques and how to modulate from one color to another. The kids have been amazed at what they can do! We will start our actual oil pastel project this week once we finish up our practice assignments.

Art 2:

These kiddos have been learning all about drawing with a vanishing point while drawing a “Bird’s Eye View” of a city. We just wrapped up our smaller practice drawing and students are now moving on to their larger piece of paper for the actual artwork. The kids have been so surprised at what they can create using these techniques!

Thanks again for all your support. It’s been a great 1st semester of art class! Have a Merry Christmas!

Go Gold Face Painting on Friday

My National Junior Art Honor Society members will be face painting during lunch and art class this Friday, September 30th. All of our proceeds will be a part of the “Go Gold” varsity football game that evening and benefit the Jacquelyn Sky Foundation, which is an organization that will help three Anderson County families that have children with cancer. Each painting is only a $1 and the donations are going to a great cause!

I appreciate your support and let me know if you have any questions!

Art Class Update

For the past few weeks, we have been working on creating and drawing our names decoratively on our portfolios. Those turned out great! : ) We are finishing up creating our sketchbooks and will start drawing in them on Monday! The kids got to use hammers and some sewing skills to assemble their sketchbooks, so they will have to tell you all about that! We are also learning our very first set of art vocabulary and will start reviewing those next week. I do have vocabulary tests or quizzes generally once or twice a six weeks (with the exception of the 1st six weeks). Next week, we are starting our first art project which will focus primarily on shading with both pencil and colored pencil.

The first six weeks will end next Friday, September 23rd.

It has been an awesome start to a great year! Thank you for your support and let me know if you have any questions!

Welcome Back!
